Penmere Manor Hotel

A short history

The hotel and its facilities are based on a house of Georgian origin, originally known as Penmere House.  It was built by a Captain of one of the Cornish Packets - ships which transported mail around the world and which play an important role in Falmouth's history. The doors to our Library are said to this day to be from one of the packet ships of that era.  The house stood outside the town, amidst fields and woods with views of the sea in the distance, and it remained in private occupation for most of its life.

During the Second World War, the then owners, members of the well-known Cornish Bolitho family, vacated the house and it became a home for injured officers, followed by a period as a teaching convent for girls.

Penmere House was transformed into an hotel in the late 1950s. It has since gone  and from that time onwards it has undergone regular upgrading, with additional rooms, an expanded restaurant and public areas and a leisure centre all being added over the years. It has always been very much a family owned and run hotel, and many guests return time and again to enjoy its tranquillity and peaceful surroundings. It is now a member of Best Western, the world's largest grouping of independently owned and operated hotels, with a commitment to value for money, hospitality and a welcoming atmosphere. The hotel also enjoys 3 star grading with a 79% assessment from the Automobile Association, And was awarded a Rosette for food in July 2008
